NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
I just saw a commercial for some "commemorative" Glade candles, which "commemorate" none other than the Mike Ditka-esque modern day Norman Rockwell: Mr. Thomas Kinkade. Barf! (Not that I want to give him a plug, but for those of you not familiar with the work of the "painter of light" here is the site: www.thomaskinkade.com--okay, so he looks more like The Office's David Brent with a paintbrush in that photo, but i think he's gotten hairplugs since the last photo I saw)

Why does this man continue have a snowy kitsch grip on the median of popular cultural and thus the living rooms of America where people with limited imagination (and apparently a lot of money to blow on his paintings which usually are just lithographs that he signs) who believe a world of snow-covered cottages still exists hang his "paintings" on their walls???? Why??? I also have heard tell of Thomas Kinkade designed sub-divisions. I don't know where they are, but I know that if I ever step into one my head will explode.

You may wonder, "Why is Shanono freaking out about T. Kinkade?" Well, I'm not entirely sure, but I think it may be because his "art" reminds me of very depressing hotels, retirement homes and restaurants that smell like fish. Don't ask, just go look. I also don't like that he brushes off legitimate criticism of his paintings as "negativity." He is the Dr. Phil of wall hangings. Also, my mother was chairing a booksale in which one of his books was part of the silent auction and received more money than a second editon copy of "Leaves of Grass"--or something of that scale.

I'm sure someone searching for old TK, will wind up at this site (after googling "Thomas Kinkade positive art" or something), and I can only hope these questions can make them think twice before plunkiing down thousands of dollars on a painting you could easily buy from a "Starving Artists!" sale at the local Holiday Inn.

Here are a few questions I have for T. Kinkade:
1) Have you ever seen a cottage?
2) Why are all of your paintings set circa 1880?
3) Why does snow and cottages equal optimism?
4) Why do you sell lithographs?
5) Why???

Is nothing sacred anymore? Not even Glade candles?
