Wow. It has been a while. New Year and all that entails. In no particular order, here is what has been going on the last couple of months: 1. We got married! “Married? Married!” –Sixteen Candles---It was just the two of us and a justice of the peace so nobody should feel left out. 2. Went to L.A. to visit Ken and Kristina—had margaritas, played lots of Scrabble, went to Amoeba, saw Brokeback Mountain (sat a little too close to the screen), went to the Getty and spent too much money on stationery, drove a Geo Metro on the 405 and lived to tell, bought a lipstick at a Rite Aid in Beverly Hills for D.G.’s mom, flew to Detroit 3. Celebrated Christmas with the fam. Played more Scrabble. Did a tour of the Southend of Dearborn, visited the Arab American History museum—did you know Dick Dale and Tiny Tim were of Arabic descent? Now you do. Had a great bridal shower with gifts and everything—collected oodles of Target giftcards. Hated the snow. Visited and visited and visited some more. Listened to WWII documentaries on 1000 decibels while staying at my grandparent’s house. Ate too much hummus and kibbee. Slept A LOT, played more Scrabble and returned to Richmond. The rest is still being played out: Work: Who will take over for our now departed executive director? I am so not wanting a career right now. I want a paycheck, just not the stress. Not that it’s even that much stress, just not really where I want to be right now. Making $ From Things I Actually Like to Do: Joya gifted us with the The Writer’s Market which I swear to Jehovah I will actually put to use. I bet you didn’t know that there are approximately 6 trillion general interest magazines out there just begging for “articles of interest to the general public.” What does that mean, exactly? I mean, I could write a huge expose on the beauty of gardens which I’m sure would be moving to some reader of Victorian Living. Or, I could write about biker gangs. I mean, “general” does not apply. Just ask D.G., who just this morning, as I watched the nationally televised Purina Dog Food Dog Trick Championships on ABC, said to me in a sad voice, “Do you know that the Canada-U.S. soccer match is being played today and that is not televised.” Not that there’s anything wrong with watching dog long jump, but who decides what is of “general interest” to people? And, further, how do dog sports fall into that? Procrastination: I decided, after watching coverage of a snowboard championship in which the commentator suggested the competitor, “get a whiff of the glove,” I figured that life outside of our boat cabin-sized apartment must have more to offer, and perhaps, could give me insight into what is “of interest to the general public.” On my mission of research and procrastination, I went to my favorite gift shop under the auspice of research and buying my friend Anne a Christmas gift. I so heart paper products it is not even funny. And this place has the best—real letterpress notecards, funky notepads, wrapping paper with old maps, cool everything. What they did not have were decent notebooks! Every single notebook/journal had something cute graphics and sayings like “Cool Ideas Go Here,” or “Friends Notebook,” or “Movie Ideas,” plastered on the cover. I mean, come on! The worst offender was a perfectly nice moleskin notebook which I almost bought but it proclaimed that it was “the official notebook of Hemingway and Monet.” Gag! I mean, it’s hard enough to write anything down without feeling embarrassed, and these people expect that I want to write it in a notebook with its own agenda? So aggravating. Finally, after at a good 20 minutes of looking, I found a nice red notebook with nothing inspirational written on it. Reality: We got an exercise bike. It is silent and deadly. I was on it for 20 minutes yesterday and actually got lightheaded. I think I’m coming down with a cold.
